A*STAR Principle #6: The tutor uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal,and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry,collaboration, and supportive interaction during the tuition lesson. A*STAR Principle #7: The tutor plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, curriculum goals and the community. A*STAR Principle #8: The tutor understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the student. A*STAR Principle #9: The tutor is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally. A*STAR Principle #10: The tutor fosters relationships with parents, guardians, fellow tutors, schools, libraries and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being.   Step 1. Match Tuition Details via SMS/Web Chat with Student Free! Confirm rate, time slots and start date with Student through SMS using your mobile phone or our Online Web Chat using the Matching Panel by clicking on the mobile icon under the SMS Me column below. Either party can initiate the matching process. The student may also initiate SMS Chat/Matching with you. Do observe courtesy by replying promptly to the Student even if you are not interested in the tuition assignment. SMS Tuition Acceptance Once you have discussed and finalised the tuition details with the student/parent through the SMS/Web chat and Matching Panel, the Student may prompt you to send Final Acceptance SMS so that they can proceed to place order for your services. Send SMS in the format ACCEPTJOB {job id} to 98131298 to accept the tuition job. The tuition job details will be sent to you via email and SMS upon receipt of the student placing an Order for your tuition services.

Online Tuition Agencies Just a Matchmaker? (Straits Times 28 Aug 2010 Home Section pg D7) Sunday, September 12, 2010 Dear Parents/Tutors, In response to the article in the Straits Times above which is suggesting that tuition agencies should be accredited by an independent controlling body , we are happy to highlight that we have long realised this problem since our incorporation in 2003 and have imposed self-regulation by : a) Requiring tutors to submit original certificates to students/parents on the first lesson. They need not do this if the they have uploaded their certificates for A-Star Tutor verification which are reflected under our Certificates Verified tag. b) Verifying the tutor's identity through our NRIC/Passport verification which is indicated by our NRIC Verified tag c) Encouraging two-way communication between student/parents and tutors through our online tuition diary. d) Encouraging tutors to use our online lesson plan so that the tuition can be more effective and students can know what to expect in the next lesson. e) Encouraging Tutor Reflection after each tuition lesson for self-assessment and self-improvement f) Student feedback on tutors based on our 10 A*Star Tutoring Principles including before and after tuition subject grades obtained. g) Blacklist tutors who receive lousy feedback from students/parents or who violate our 10 Principles of A*Star Tutoring. h) Last but not least, unlike other tuition agencies which are out to match every tuition requests and maximise agency commission and revenue, we will not recommend any tutors to students/parents if we find them not suitable and will not hesitate to tell the student/parent so. We emphasize on quality service instead of quantity as our name A*Star signifies. Doing otherwise would jeopardize our reputation and long-term existence in the tuition agency industry. Much as we understand that the tutor selection process needs to cater to the specific needs of the student which can easily be done with our multi-criteria, multi-option database search engine, the ultimate difference and true test of a good tutor match is whether the tutor can convey his/her knowledge across to the student and improvement of student grades and not so much the tutor's qualifications. The above would mean the need for Tutor Accreditation instead of Tuition Agency Accreditation. To avoid the imposition of mandatory accreditation of tutors which invariably would follow along the lines of our 10 A*Star Tutoring Principles , we try to preempt this by helping our tutors comprehend what is required and expected of them by parents/students during the tuition process. We have since 2006 posted our 10 Principles of A*Star Tutoring which we encourage our tutors to adopt and which our tutor assessment criteria is based upon. We encourage all our tutors (old and new) to familiarise themselves with these principles and apply them during the entire duration their student is with them whether inside or outside tuition hours.
